This pissed me off beyond the telling. Not the original post, but the blithe, “yeah, I’m screwing you and I could give a fuck, aren’t I frickin’ ADORABLE?” attitude of a certain commenter.
Hey, doll. I know you’re sort of irredeemably slimy, you know you’re sort of irredeemably slimy, do we really have to listen to your attempts to justify your sliminess on top of it?

We do?

Really?

*sigh*

How ’bout this: If you can’t afford to buy a book, instead of stealing it…don’t buy it. Save up. That’s what I do when I see something I want and don’t have the money in my wallet to purchase it. Yeah, I know – how 20th century. Why eschew instant gratification at any cost? Not like it’s SCREWED AN ENTIRE ECONOMY OR ANYTHING.

The invitation to blow me stands. I’m sure you won’t mind if I close my eyes and think of England (or Edinburgh, as the case may be), and then disinfect like a scene out of Silkwood when you’re through, right?

I need to go buy something off iTunes and pay for it. Maybe twice, for good measure. Who knows? Maybe it’ll start a trend.

I lolled at your comment there, which I needed to snap me out of my own murderous rage, but I kept reading and worked the froth back up pretty quickly.

Somebody (I’m not going back to check because I like my blood pressure where it is) suggested reader backlash (peer pressure) as a form of deterrent, but as you can tell from the comments, that’s ineffective because they proudly proclaim right up front and in your face, “I ALREADY KNOW it’s unethical and illegal, and I DON’T CARE.”

And the comparisons to the music industry diversifying make me absolutely homicidal. A stadium full of people aren’t going to shell out $60 a ticket to come see midlist author read an excerpt. Readers who bemoan their embarrassment over romance novel covers aren’t going to buy T-shirts and posters with those covers printed on them.

“What the industry needs to do is make it less appealing for me to steal.” Blame the victim much? How about you steal a fucking moral compass next time?

Arrrrgggghhhh!!!!

I didn’t bother to go back and read anything after my own comment. Just as nothing is going to convince the thief to change her ways, there isn’t much that will convince me not to consider her amoral scum.

If she’s willing to steal from me (or others like me), what else is she willing to do? Shoplift? Cheat on her taxes? The fact that she’s apparently got buddies at the Cool Kids’ Table only reinforces my prior opinions in that direction, too. Where’s the outcry? The demands for her bloodied head on a pike?

So for anybody who’s keeping score:

Plagiarism/Authors stealing from other authors = END OF THE FREAKIN’ WORLD.

eBook piracy/Readers stealing from authors = Meh. Next topic.

Arrrrgggghhhh indeed.

I compared the idjits to insanely clipped poodles.

You think they got it?

I doubt it. They’re not as bright as your average poodle, stooopid show clip or not.
